Tulare County high school athlete of the week, Oct. 14-17

Visalia Times-Delta/Tulare Advance-Register readers can now vote for their favorite high school athletes.

The poll closes at noon on Friday. There are no restrictions, so vote now and vote often. Please do not email your votes.

Here are the choices for the week of Oct. 6-11, 2025:

  • Jimmie Burk, football, Redwood: Burk rushed for 165 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Rangers to a victory against Monache.
  • Isaiah Colunga, football, Strathmore: Colunga, a quarterback, bolted for a game-high 145 yards rushing and three touchdowns to help the Spartans knock off previously undefeated Woodlake. He also had three tackles and an interception on defense.
  • Shondel Hogan, football, Central Valley Christian: Hogan ran for 58 yards and a touchdown and also had a 75-yard touchdown reception as the Cavaliers edged Kingsburg.
  • Nate Lopez, football, Dinuba: Lopez rushed for 139 yards and scored three touchdowns (two receiving, rushing) in a victory at Tulare Western.
  • Leah Merrill, girls golf, Tulare Western: Merrill shot a career-best 83 to help the Mustangs win a West Yosemite League mini tournament at Tulare Golf Course.
  • Brayden Stevenson, football, Tulare Union: Stevenson scored two receiving touchdowns in a loss to Hanford.
  • Matt Townsend, football, Mt. Whitney: Townsend rushed for 117 yards and three touchdowns to hand the Pioneers their first win of the season. He also scored on a 19-yard catch.

How to nominate an Athlete of the Week

Nominations are based on information available to the Times-Delta.

All high school varsity players from Tulare County can be on the ballot. Nominations must be received by Monday morning following that week’s games for consideration.

Anyone can nominate an athlete of the week for every sport. Nominate next week’s ballot through email. Readers can email nominations to sports reporter Vongni Yang at [email protected]. Please include a player’s statistics and a photo if possible.
