Current forward Temwa Chawinga carried off the field with apparent non-contact injury

Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga has been carried off the field after an apparent non-contact injury.

Chawinga, the reigning NWSL MVP, went down in the first half of the Current’s road match against the Houston Dash on Saturday. The forward stayed down for several minutes while being attended to by a trainer.

Chawinga exited the game in the 29th minute, and was replaced by Nichelle Prince. She was carried off with her arms around defender Izzy Rodriguez and a member of the Current staff, without putting any weight on her right leg.

The Current have not provided an update on Chawinga’s condition, with the game still in the second half.

Chawinga currently leads the NWSL’s Golden Boot race with 15 goals, just two ahead of the second-highest goalscoerer, NJ/NY Gotham FC’s Esther. She has been a driving factor behind the Current’s historic 2025 season, with the team clinching the NWSL Shield in September with five games remaining in the regular season. Kansas City has been unstoppably dominant, winning 20 games and holding a nearly 20-point lead over the rest of the league table.

With that kind of lead, and with only two games left in the season, it does raise some questions why Chawinga was on the field in the first place. While the Current are high above the rest of the NWSL, the Dash are hanging onto postseason hopes by their fingernails, with two must-win games to end the season.

And yet while dominating the league and playing a 10th-place team away, Kansas City head coach Vlatko Andonovski opted to start most of his key attacking players, including Chawinga, striker Bia Zaneratto and forwards Debinha and Michelle Cooper. Debinha and Cooper were later subbed out in the 66th minute.

Chawinga scored 20 goals last season in her MVP campaign, setting a new NWSL single-season record. The forward is set to have a bobblehead night for Kansas City’s final home match, on Nov. 2.
