Sean Payton has changed short-week routine from Bill Parcells

Sean Payton learned a lot from Bill Parcells, including some mistakes.

Payton coached under Parcells with the Dallas Cowboys from 2003-2005, and Payton applied much of what he learned when he became head coach of the New Orleans Saints. One key change that Payton has made is how he handles short weeks.

After playing on Sunday, the Broncos now have a Thursday Night Football game on deck against the Las Vegas Raiders. Parcells, an old-school coach, would have continued the grind. Payton has learned to give players time to recover.

“Recovery tomorrow,” Payton said after Sunday’s game. “Everything about tomorrow is recovery. Walk through. We’ve learned a little bit more over the years. I’ve told you this story, I think in Dallas you play everything Thanksgiving Thursday and our first year there with Bill, we were meeting [Sunday after games]. We went home and met tonight, whatever we did, it wasn’t right.

“I think we’ve learned a little bit more about the time from this game and how we have to get these guys mentally and physically recovered from it and then, fortunately, we’re playing at home.”

After recovering and doing walk-through practices this week, Denver will host the Raiders on Thursday, then they’ll get a mini bye with 10 days before their next game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Nov. 16. We’ll see if this week’s light workload leads to positive results on Thursday.
