To add on to a stretch that has buried them further out of the playoff picture, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ injury woes just keep getting worse.
On Monday, the Penguins placed star forward Evgeni Malkin on injured reserve. In a correpsponding move, they recalled forward Jesse Puljujarvi from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (WBS), Pittsburgh’s AHL affiliate.
Malkin was injured during the first period of the Penguins’ 4-1 loss to the Seattle Kraken on Saturday. He returned to the bench briefly on his own accord, and he did not come back out for the second period after what the Penguins designated as a “lower-body injury.”
The 38-year-old center has nine goals and 34 points in 47 games on the season. He started the season with a bang, registering two goals and 11 points in his first five games and three goals and 14 points in his first 10 games to begin 2024-25.
Since then, he has 20 points in his last 37 games, including just two goals and four points in his last 10 games.
Puljujarvi was recently waived by Pittsburgh then sent down just a couple of weeks later. At the NHL level this season, Puljujarvi has put up three goals and nine points in 25 games; and in three games at the AHL level, he registered a goal and three points over three games played.
