In 2021, the NJSIAA returned to a two-group model for non-public football state championships for the first time since 1992.
From 1992 to 2014, non-public teams were split into four groups. Non-Public Group 1 was eliminated after the 2014 season, and there were three groups through the 2019 season.

After no state championship games were played in 2020, the NJSIAA re-established Non-Public A and Non-Public B in 2021.
