Cowboys’ defensive appraisal: Nacho average overhaul needed

Just about everybody likes a great plate of nachos. Seasoned meat, creamy beans, guacamole, sour cream, melted cheese, tomato, salsa, jalapenos… it’s an All-Star cast of savory deliciousness. But for as good as a plate of nachos can be, it’s hard not to think the sum of its parts might actually be better than the whole in this case.

Depending on the construction of the nachos, there’s often a design flaw with most plates. Sogginess is unavoidable and unbalanced bites are inevitable. Looking at it with a critical eye one could easily deduce nachos are the least effective way to serve this particular collection of ingredients. Tacos, burritos, dips and even salads make for better vessels of ingestion.

The 2025 Dallas Cowboys defense is a lot like a plate of nachos. Despite having multiple tasty ingredients, the finished dish is found wanting. Players like Quinnen Williams, Osa Odighizuwa, Kenny Clark, DeMarvion Overshown, Malik Hooker, and DaRon Bland are proven high quality ingredients, yet when plunked into the Cowboys’ system, they leave something to be desired. Like a plate of nachos, the sum of the parts is better than the whole.

Whether it’s scheme fit or playcalling that’s dragging them down, it appears to be a design flaw in Dallas. That’s not to say all the ingredients are great and don’t need to be replaced this offseason, just that some are clearly worth keeping and building around next season.

It goes beyond just the obvious pieces listed above. Less proven players like Shevon Revel, Caelen Carson, Marist Liufau and Shemar James might be worthwhile ingredients as well. Their disappointing play may be more to do with the recipe they’re forced to work with than a fair representation of what they really offer.

Perhaps in the right scheme, under the right coach, these players can thrive. It’s not uncommon to see players be scheme-specific in the NFL. Until the Cowboys truly test them out in different roles and responsibilities they won’t really know.

Most will agree, there’s a pretty good chance the Cowboys start over at defensive coordinator again this offseason. Matt Erburflus has struggled mightily at the helm, and his scheme has repeatedly been called an ill-fit for the Cowboys’ depth and personnel. Just because the chips get soggy isn’t cause for getting rid of the seasoned meat altogether. It just means that seasoned meat should probably be deployed in a different way.

Dallas defensive players deserve blame, but the Cowboys would be wise not to throw the baby out with the bathwater this offseason. While that may be one metaphor too many, it speaks to the importance of a nuanced analysis this winter. Some of these Cowboys’ defenders may just need the right recipe in which to thrive. It makes the coaching search paramount and argues that instead of a massive overhaul, the Cowboys just need the right overhaul.
