Social media roasts USC for ending Notre Dame rivalry

There was some big news for Notre Dame on Monday afternoon, its rivalry with USC will pause for at least 5 years.

The two teams were originally scheduled to play next year, but that was an option game that the Trojans had ducked out of already. It wasn’t official until yesterday, but many had seen the writing on the wall, the battle for the Jeweled Shillelagh will be on a break.

It didn’t take long for social media to react on both sides, many of them putting the blame on USC for not wanting to continue the storied series. You can find below some of the best reactions from social media on both sides of the rivalry.

This was USC’s plan all along

As I mentioned before, if you looked at how the Trojans were acting towards the rivalry, you could see this coming. There were plenty of signs.

Notre Dame knew it was coming too

Before the USC news came out, the Irish announced a home-and-home with BYU, jumping the cycle. Notre Dame’s administration knew this day was coming and had a plan, a very good plan.

Los Angeles local media blames Lincoln Riley, USC

Pedro’s Papadakis, a host at LA Sports 570 AM, went off on Riley, as he doesn’t understand the history at USC. He said “this is a dark mark on the university for the lack of leaders … it’s a shameful day in the history of college football.”

USC legend Keyshawn Johnson also blames his alma mater

The former All-American wondered what was going on inside the athletic department along with more bashing of Riley not understanding the programs history. Johnson said “why would we cancel our biggest rivalry because we can’t beat them? It makes zero sense.” Strong words from a former star Trojan.

Has USC become soft?

It’s hard to see why ducking a historic rival is a good idea. The Trojan faithful can argue all they want about why it makes sense, but they know deep down, it really doesn’t.

The good days of college football are gone?

This Clemson fan makes a very valid points, as there are so many factors now pulling teams to do this. USC isn’t the only team to opt out of games, but this might be the biggest importance one yet.

Other former Trojans aren’t happy with the decision either

Johnson doesn’t seem like he’s alone in his anger, as this post claims others aren’t happy with the decision either. You have to wonder how much pull the former players have to try and get this game back on the schedule.

USC wants an easier path to the College Football Playoff

The Trojans have had some recent chances to make the playoff, only to falter late. Notre Dame said they’d play anytime, anywhere, but USC still didn’t want to risk losing a game for the sake of keep the rivalry going.
