Sean Payton’s ‘maniacal with the details’ because he hates losing

The Denver Broncos’ loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars may unleash the best out of the Broncos, at the perfect time. Broncos head coach Sean Payton has had much success in the NFL, in part to his fear and hatred of losing.

“I just think I hate losing more than anything in the world,” said Payton. “I think fear of failure is a very significant motivating factor. I think from a details standpoint, there’s nothing that’s too small that’s not significant. That has to exist outside the lines as well. The entry way, the locker room, the signage, postgame. In everything we do, there’s been thought given to all of it. Almost maniacal with the details. I just think that eventually the feeling of the player feeling like, ‘They’ve thought of everything.’”

Denver quarterback Bo Nix shares Payton’s feelings. “I think that’s more of the common theme that we have (a hatred of losing),” said Nix. “We’re very competitive. We don’t like losing, and we’re going to do everything we can to win. Because of that you’re going to get that competitiveness, you’re going to get that drive, you’re going to get the details, you’re going to get the little things all to not avoid the loss and pick up a win no matter what it looks like.”

The Broncos’ ability to rebound after a loss will be tested on Christmas Day, in an AFC West matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. You can only play who is in front of you, and the Broncos have had remarkable success in 2025. After the Jaguars loss, Payton emphasized drilling down on the details of the things Denver is doing well, and the things they are struggling at.

“I said this to the team; I said, ‘Part of this process is not fooling ourselves,'” Payton said. “‘(The Jaguars) beat us tonight. They beat us good in all three areas, and it starts with me.’  Even though that hurts going down, you can’t spit it out and you have to swallow it. That’s the truth. They beat us in all three areas. We have to coach better. We have to look at what we’re doing. We have to make sure we’re not doing too much.”

They now have an opportunity to rebound in Kansas City.

“Coach [Payton is] very detailed, very specific in what he wants, so it honestly makes it a little easier playing for him because you know what he wants, he’s going to explain it to you,” Nix said. “As a player, you just have to do what he’s asking of you. If you mess up, he’s just going to run it again. Nothing to it. Just do it again, and do it again and feel it out. Make sure you do it right and then we’ll move onto the next one. It’s a really important thing I think for the details to be important, and if the details are important, no matter big or small, you’re going to have a good, detailed team.”

The Broncos are looking to bounce back in a big way, and hopefully not be revisited by the ‘ghost of Christmas past’ of years ago.
