Chiefs coach Andy Reid on Super Bowl: We’re not talking about a 3-peat

As Super Bowl LIX approaches, the Kansas City Chiefs have a chance to achieve a historic three-peat. But Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said the team is not focusing on history when preparing for the game.

On “The Rich Eisen Show” on Friday, Reid said that as the Chiefs prepare to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans, the chance for a three-peat is not at the forefront of their minds. Reid said that, though he’d been asked about it in the lead-up to the Super Bowl, he hasn’t heard anyone on the Chiefs talking about the potential milestone.

“I haven’t heard one mention of it. I haven’t mentioned it. I don’t plan on mentioning it, but I’m also not naïve enough to know that they’ve heard it,” Reid said. “I mean, I’ve heard it a ton up to this point and I’m sure I’ll hear it more this next week down in New Orleans.

“We all know that’s out there but what matters is how you take care of business,” Reid added. “What’s going to help you is that you focus in and take care or business today while we’re doing our practices or in the meetings we have today. Take care of that and everything else you let the chips fall where they may.”

The possibility of a Chiefs three-peat has been a narrative throughout the season. The Chiefs won the past two NFL titles — the ninth time in NFL history that a team has won back-to-back Super Bowls. Three-peats are far more rare in pro sports; the most recent was the 2000-02 Lakers dynasty in the NBA.

But Reid said that his players have stayed more focused on winning and beating the Eagles, rather than making history.

“You’ve got two great teams playing each other so it’s hard to predict one way or the other, but you can, though, control how you prepare yourself,” Reid said. “So that’s what we’ve been doing. We’ve been doing that all season, and I’m sure the guys have been asked that a bunch, but I never hear them mention it. They’ve just sort of stayed focused.”

Festivities for the Super Bowl will kick off next week, before the game on Feb. 9.
