Rangers secure point, but fall to Hurricanes on Jackson Blake’s overtime game-winner

The Rangers were defeated by the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in overtime on Monday night at the Lenovo Center.

Here are some takeaways…

Mike Sullivan gave Vladislav Gavrikov a chance on the top power play unit, and the big defenseman was sure to make the most of it, firing home a one-timer from the point to give the Rangers the lead just 1:39 seconds into this one.

Gavrikov already has a new career-high with seven goals through just 41 games this season.

– Carolina made the Rangers pay for a pair of penalties of their own later in the opening period, though, as Sebastian Aho snipped a wrister from the top left circle with a 5-on-3 advantage to even things at one apiece.

Aho has now scored 13 times in 34 career games against the Blueshirts.

– New York managed just five shots in the opening 20 minutes, but Igor Shesterkin did his best to keep them in this one, making 11 saves including a point blank one-timer from the slot late in the period.

– Shesterkin continued making big saves to keep things tied, and the Rangers’ fourth line rewarded him with seven minutes left in the second, as Jonny Brodzinski was perfectly placed to bat home a deflected shot and regain the lead.

It was Brodzinski’s fourth goal of the season, and his fourth point in his last four games.

– With some tired legs on the Rangers bench the Hurricanes answered back midway through the third, as Jordan Martinook parked himself in front and had the game-tying goal deflect off his foot past Shesterkin to even things back up at two.

Martinook made some contact with the goalie, but it wasn’t enough for New York to be comfortable challenging.

– Things stayed that way through the rest of regulation, then Jackson Blake deflected a power play goal past Shesterkin with just 12.6 seconds remaining in overtime to help Carolina secure the second point.

– New York officially has a 19-17-5 record at the halfway-point of the season.
