St. Brown revealed after the game that the pitch to Jahmyr Gibbs has been in the playbook for over a year
One of the many Detroit Lions highlights in the team’s 38-30 win in Baltimore in Week 3 was a trick play that gave the Lions the lead for good. It turns out, it’s been a play that has been in the works for a very long time.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, with the score tied at 21, the Lions pulled out a fun gadget play executed to perfection. Jared Goff handed the ball to Amon-Ra St. Brown, who pitched it out wide to Jahmyr Gibbs for the go-ahead TD. It caught the Ravens defense completely off-guard, masterfully executed by all Lions involved.
That could be because they’ve practiced it a lot. After the game, St. Brown revealed to the ESPN crew that this play has been in the book for some time.
“We got the look that we wanted,” St Brown said of the key play. “Everything worked out. The pitch to Gibbs, we’ve been working on that for over a year.”
St. Brown continued,
“Funny story. Gibbs in the meeting room this week, he said, ‘we have that play up every week and we never call it’. I said, ‘just because you said that, we’re calling it this week.”
And it worked like a charm, keying the huge road win to help the Lions improve to 2-1.
