Auburn pitchers allow just two hits, defeat Georgia Tech 1-0
When the Auburn Tigers defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets early in April, it required nine runs for the Tigers to get the victory. Only one run was required in the Tigers’ 1-0 victory on Tuesday night at Plainsman Park. It was a dominating performance from the Tigers’ pitchers. The win now gives Auburn a 28-13 record and a season sweep of the Yellow Jackets. It is an important win after the Tigers struggled over the weekend versus No. 1 Texas. Auburn now has some momentum heading into their weekend series versus Mississippi State.
Christian Chatterton got the start on Tuesday for the Tigers, and he did not disappoint. Chatterton pitched four scoreless innings and struck out six batters. He did not allow any hits, but did walk three batters. He opened the second inning by striking out both Alex Hernandez and Vahn Lackey swinging. He was relieved by John Armstrong in the fifth inning. Armstrong did not allow any runs, but he did give it the two hits accumulated by Georgia Tech in the game. Carson Myers entered in the seventh inning and continued the great pitching for two innings. In those innings, he threw 17 pitches, and 15 were strikes. That resulted in four of the Tigers’ 15 strikeouts in the game. Cam Tilly finished the game in the ninth inning to pick up the save.
The Georgia Tech pitchers were good as well. Starting pitcher Jaylen Paden struggled and was relieved early in the second inning. He gave up five walks in his short time on the mound, and four of those occurred in the second inning. He opened the inning by walking Lucas Steele, Eric Snow, and Cade Belyeu to load the bases with zero outs. He followed that up by striking out Eric Guevara and Chris Rembert. Then, Cooper McMurray was up to bat. He walked and that advanced Steele to home to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Auburn only had one hit versus Paden, but held the lead.
Brett Barfield finished the inning for Georgia Tech, and Ike Irish was unable to get on base. Barfield would give way to Chris Ballard, who pitched a solid three innings, followed by Kayden Campbell and Connor Chicoli. Auburn only had five hits in the game. Chris Rembert was the most successful batter for the Tigers with two hits on five at-bats.
Auburn will now turn its attention back to SEC play as it welcomes Mississippi State for a weekend series. Game one will be on Friday night with a start time of 6 p.m. CT and will be broadcast by SEC Network+. Game two will also be a 6 p.m. CT start on Saturday, and game three will begin at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday.
