Auburn’s Samuel Dutton among top performers following LSU series

Dutton’s stunning start on the mound played a role in Auburn’s series-opening win over LSU last Friday night.

Auburn baseball swept LSU for the first time since 1988 over the weekend, due in part to the efforts of Auburn right-hander Samuel Dutton.

Against his former team, Dutton struck out seven batters while allowing three hits and zero runs over 6.0 innings of work in No. 12 Auburn’s 8-4 series-opening win over No. 3 LSU on Friday night. His performance, which paved the way for the home-standing Tigers to sweep their first top-five opponent since 2017, earns him a spot on D1Baseball’s top performers list for week nine. Dutton joins several key pitchers, including Jack Anker of Fresno State, Wilson Perkins of Davidson, and Harrison Bodendorf of Oklahoma State on this week’s list.

Following his strong start last Friday, Dutton told reporters that the game plan put together by his coaches did not let him down.

“It felt awesome. It was a great experience,” Dutton said Friday. “I tried to keep the main thing the main thing, execute the plan and just really attack the hitters. It was just business as usual.”

Dutton is now 5-2 on the season with a 2.34 ERA and a career-high 58 strikeouts. He will look to continue his superb season on Thursday when the Tigers travel to Austin to battle No. 1 Texas for a three-game series.
