Bill Simmons Explains Why Kevin Durant Trade Wouldn’t Help Timberwolves originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Minnesota Timberwolves were among the teams interested in adding Kevin Durant to their roster via a blockbuster NBA trade, which might have included moving Rudy Gobert or Julius Randle and other roster members.
However, recent developments in the KD speculation include ESPN’s NBA insider Shams Charania reporting that the two-time NBA champion has “no desire to be in Minnesota.”
That news has probably crushed many fans’ dreams of seeing a KD and Anthony Edwards pairing on the Timberwolves, which could wreak nightly havoc on opponents with their scoring abilities.
The Ringer’s Bill Simmons contends that trading for Durant probably wasn’t in the team’s best interest anyway. He admitted he has “questions about him and Edwards” working well together on the team.
“That feels dueling banjos to me. Feels like another [Devin] Booker situation, where there’s a lot of Durant standing in the corner. ‘I guess I’m not in this one,’ and he has that weird body language thing he gets going from time to time,” he said on his podcast.
Instead, Simmons suggested that KD would be much more beneficial for the Houston Rockets, who could offer some younger players in a trade and wouldn’t mind allowing Durant to be in the driver’s seat for games.
Regarding the Timberwolves, Simmons believes that they should try to get Edwards a point guard.
“If I’m gonna make trades, I’m not trading for Kevin Durant. I want to get somebody who can actually handle the ball, take pressure off Edwards, and get fast breaks,” he told his co-host.
Simmons mentioned that veteran guard Mike Conley looked 50 during the Western Conference Finals loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Conley, 37, has played in the league since 2007 and is entering the final year of his contract with Minnesota.
He averaged 8.2 points, 4.5 assists, and 2.6 rebounds a game in his 19th season in the league.
Minnesota already has Donte DiVincenzo and Rob Dillingham, whom they traded with the San Antonio Spurs for at the 2024 NBA Draft, as backup guard options.
Adding a suitable starting point guard to replace Conley makes sense, as the team could possibly keep some of their frontcourt intact for another run at the NBA Finals.
Some of the star guards the Wolves could consider to trade for might include Darius Garland, Trae Young, and De’Aaron Fox.
