Breaking down Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s contract

The Seattle Seahawks signed veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to a one-year contract in free agency. Valdes-Scantling is currently penciled into the No. 3 wideout role opposite Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp.

At the time, Valdes-Scantling’s deal was reported as a one-year agreement without any of the more intimate details. Over The Cap has since updated that information. The base value of Valdes-Scantling’s contract is $4 million. The breakdown includes a $1.5 million signing bonus, a $2.245 million base salary, and up to $255,000 in per-game bonuses. The cap number equals $3.955 million. ESPN’s Brady Henderson notes that the initial reports claimed “up to $5.5 million,” implying $1.5 million in incentives.

Valdes-Scantling split the 2024 campaign with the Buffalo Bills and New Orleans Saints. Overall, Valdes-Scantling concluded his uneven campaign by recording just 19 receptions for 411 yards and four touchdowns. He was significantly more productive down the stretch in the Saints’ offense, totaling 17 catches, 385 yards and all four of his end-zone visits.

The move by Seattle reunites Valdes-Scantling with new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, who was his play-caller in New Orleans. That familiarity should help Valdes-Scantling make an impact in Kubiak’s offense for a second consecutive season.
