On Monday, the San Jose Sharks are holding goaltender Vitek Vanecek out of the lineup against the Buffalo Sabres for trade-related reasons.

Alexandar Georgiev will make his second start in as many days after he made 25 saves against the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 3-2 shootout win.

San Jose only has two goalies on the roster, so Vanecek will be Georgiev’s backup. Teams often scratch skaters in these situations to protect them from injury before the trade is completed.
Vanecek will back up, there are no other Sharks who will be held out for trade purposes today

It is unclear now where Vanecek will be headed and what the return will be. San Jose has no salary retention spots left, so either a third team is involved in the deal, or the acquiring team can have Vanecek’s $3.4 million AAV under the cap.
Yaroslav Askarov, the San Jose Sharks’ top goalie prospect, is currently injured and in the AHL but will likely be the first recall to the NHL once healthy.
In 13 games in the NHL this season, Askarov has four wins, a .896 save percentage, and a 3.10 GAA.
