Browns GM says RB’s return ‘increasingly unlikely’

Nick Chubb might be running to a new city in 2025.

At least that seems to be the indication from Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry. During an appearance on “The Kevin Carman Show with Anthony Lima” on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, Berry said it’s unlikely Chubb will return.

“I wouldn’t rule anything out, but I would say it’s probably increasingly unlikely,” Berry said. “We do have two young guys that we like. We think Jerome [Ford] plays a role. It’s basically kind of maybe seeing how the roles shake out in the running backs room.

“Look, you’re never going to rule out someone as near and dear to our heart as Nick. And I would expect him to take another step, being another year removed from the injury. But I’d say maybe a return is less likely – at least in the short term – with us right now.”

Berry noted that the team kept in contact with Chubb and his representatives leading into the draft, but the communication is not as strong in the aftermath.

It doesn’t come as a shock that the Browns have seemingly moved on from Chubb at the moment. Cleveland selected a pair of running backs in the draft, taking Ohio State’s Quinshon Judkins and Tennessee’s Dylan Sampson.

With Jerome Ford and Pierre Strong Jr. also on the roster, it’s become an increasingly crowded room that leaves Chubb as the odd man out.

The 29-year-old Chubb has played in just 10 games over the past two seasons due to injuries. The running back suffered a devastating knee injury in Week 2 of the 2023 season that kept him out through the first six weeks of the 2024 season. After playing in eight games following his return, Chubb’s year again ended early when he broke his foot against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 15.

Chubb, a second-round pick in 2018, has been a key piece of the Browns’ offense during his time in Cleveland. Concerns about a major injury suffered in college pushed him into the second round of that draft, but the former Georgia star wasn’t impacted by that after making the leap to the pros.

“My job in decision-making is to be non-emotional. And then in terms of managing and treating people, it’s to be able to do it as empathetically as possible,” Berry said. “I think one of the hardest things is when you transition away from a player who meant a lot to the organization and meant a lot to the community.”

Berry continued, saying that the reality of football is that players can’t stay with the team forever.

“But the reality of it is, look, I’d love for key players in our organization to stay with us forever, play until they’re 45,” Berry said. “Unfortunately, this sport doesn’t allow that. And so that’s part of the tough parts of the job, but it doesn’t change how you view, or treat, or feel about the guys who have come through as people.”

While the odds of a Chubb return don’t look great at the moment, he does remain a free agent. Injuries are inevitable and situations change. Until Chubb is wearing a different jersey, anything is possible.
