WILKES-BARRE — A seventh inning momentum swing by Tri-Valley’s bats led to a 6-5 win over Holy Redeemer in the PIAA first round state playoffs Monday at Wilkes University.
The Bulldogs (20-6) will now play the winner of the Mount Union-Montgomery first round game Thursday at a site and time TBA.
“It’s a whole different experience at states and there’s a lot of pressure to win games,” said Tri-Valley’s Gavin Klock. “The experience from last year certainly helps.”
Klock’s impact on Tri-Valley’s win was immeasurable, delivering the go-ahead two-run base hit in the top of the seventh and allowing just three runs through four innings in his start on the mound.
“I was throwing well and we were answering with the bats so it equaled out,” said Klock. “We just had to keep fighting to get runs back on the board and we did that.”
Tri-Valley’s seventh inning eruption saw the Bulldogs plate four runs in the seventh after trailing 3-2 before Braeden Doyle slammed the door for the win in the bottom of the seventh.
“Just like the district championship game we put runs up in the last inning which is tremendous,” said Tri-Valley head coach Brent Smith. “These kids are relentless from the top of the lineup to the bottom and it took all of them today.”
Holy Redeemer (19-5) went up in the bottom of the first on a Zachary Schultz RBI groundout to shortstop to score Cody Quaglia for the initial 1-0 lead.
Once the Bulldogs loaded the bases in the bottom of the second, Parker Hatter came home to score on a passed ball to knot the score at 1-1.
Klock was solid in his start, forcing three consecutive ground ball outs to retire the side in the bottom of the second.
“They (Holy Redeemer) still scored three runs but my arm still felt good,” said Klock.
Owen Miller was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the fourth to put a runner on for Tri-Valley before trucking Holy Redeemer’s second baseman when he was caught in a rundown between first and second. The out ended the top of the fourth.
Holy Redeemer took another lead in the bottom of the fourth, beginning with a Jett Kelsall RBI double to center field followed by a Nick Mazzarella RBI single to left field for the 3-1 advantage.
Jake Hatter stepped to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and doubled on a line drive to right field for the 3-2 difference.
“My philosophy is we come out here to hit and they (Holy Redeemer) had a very good pitcher and we got into him the one inning,” said Smith.
Braeden Doyle went on to pitch the fifth inning for Tri-Valley sat down Holy Redeemer 1-2-3 before allowing just a walk in the sixth. He kept the Bulldogs ahead in the seventh when he allowed two runs to cross home plate.
Klock struck with a two-run single plus an error on a ground ball to the pitcher to score Remington Klinger and Doyle for the 4-3 lead.
“Just like in the district finals he came up for us on the mound and at the plate,” said Smith. “He went up there, battled, did his job and he did it.”
Peyton Schly and Gavin Scheib each walked with the bases loaded to expand the lead to 6-3 heading to the bottom of the seventh.
Doyle allowed just two runs to cross home plate, a Quaglia RBI double to left field and a Schultz RBI single to left field, for the 6-5 final.
Doyle and Hatter led Tri-Valley’s lineup with two hits apiece and each went for extra base hits.
