Can Fields Answer Jets’ QB Question? originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
When the New York Jets signed Justin Fields in free agency to a two-year, $40 million deal, there were a lot of questions raised about it.
Do the Jets see Fields as the long-term starter under Aaron Glenn? Or will he be seen purely as a bridge option until the franchise can get the quarterback they truly want next offseason?
Those questions can be answered by Fields in 2025 if he plays well enough to turn the Jets’ head when thinking about him as the long-term solution.
And for ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Justin will get his chance to answer New York’s quarterback question to the satisfaction of wondering fans.
“It sounds like the Jets are going to give Fields a real chance to answer this question, one way or the other,” Graziano writes. “They certainly haven’t ruled out the idea that he can be their long-term starter at quarterback. He’s still only 26 years old and has a unique combination of experience and upside.
“That said, the $10 million in guaranteed money on his contract for 2026 won’t stand in the way of the team drafting or acquiring someone it sees as a better option next spring if Fields doesn’t play well enough to convince it otherwise.”
Fields has it all in front of him this upcoming season, and yes, he has had a solid start to his offseason, but once training camp begins, we will see how he is truly faring in Tanner Engstrand’s system.
The former first-round pick, by playing well in the regular season, can not only give the Jets something to think about, but he can also put himself into the shop window of other teams who might be in the market for a quarterback.
So there are a couple of ways this could go for Fields in 2025.
He has the tools to answer New York’s quarterback question – but the bigger question is, can he?
