Canucks Unlikely To Trade Star Forward Tonight

Saturday was full of headlines for the Vancouver Canucks as the J.T. Miller trade speculation reached a near-boiling point. This comes after a disappointing 5-1 loss to the L.A. Kings on Thursday night. During Sportsnet’s Hockey Day In Canada broadcast, insider Elliotte Friedman weighed in on some of the rumours.

“There was a time over the last 24 hours where J.T. Miller was not going to play,” he said during the Saturday night headlines program ahead of the team’s matchup against the Edmonton Oilers.

In the TV hit, Friedman confirmed that while “talks were progressing on a trade,” this deal will not be happening tonight as Miller will be hitting the ice against the Oilers. As well, Friedman confirmed that the interested party was Miller’s former team, the New York Rangers.

“Things had progressed to a certain point where it definitely looked like he wasn’t going to play,” Friedman added.

During this segment, Friedman also made note of tampering issues that had occurred with members of the Canucks organization earlier in the week. The team released a notice explaining that “nobody is allowed to talk to any of [the team’s] players” without their permission. Since then, they have granted certain teams permission to talk to Miller.

As for Vancouver’s other star Centre, Friedman clarified that Elias Pettersson “has told the Canucks that he would like to stay.”
