AUSTIN — Day one of the UIL state track meet is nearly complete, and a number of athletes from the Texas Panhandle will be heading home with medals.
After the Amarillo-area claimed a medal haul the 3,200-meter run earlier in the day, multiple athletes from the region claimed gold medals in the 1,600-meter run as well.
Canyon’s Addyson Bristow, who also won the 800-meter run on Thursday, took home another gold medal and a state record after winning the Class 4A 1,600 with a time of 4 minutes, 48.64 seconds.
Bristow was the UIL Class 4A runner-up in the same event last season, losing only to former teammate Hannah Stuart, who now runs at the University of Missouri.
In the Class 4A boys Canyon narrowly missed another gold, as Ryan Fernandez took home the silver medal with a time of 4:18.19. His teammate Lathan Lewter was fourth in 4:21.50.
Fernandez finished second in the mile at the 2024 UIL state track meet.
