The Indiana Pacers will return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis for Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday, June 19, on the brink of elimination down 3-2.

Oklahoma City grabbed control of the series on its home court Monday night behind 40 points from Jalen Williams as well as 31 points and 10 assists from reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. But as problematic as the Pacers’ defense was, allowing the Thunder to score 120 points in an 11-point win, the bigger concern is star point guard Tyrese Haliburton’s health.

Haliburton, Indiana’s best player and offensive engine, aggravated a lower leg injury during the first quarter of Game 5, which resulted in him leaving the court and heading back to the locker room for treatment.

He finished the night having played 34 minutes, though he tied a career-low with just four points on the evening on 0-for-6 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 shooting from the free throw line. Haliburton added seven rebounds and six assists, but was clearly hampered by the leg issue throughout the course of the contest.

Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle addressed Haliburton’s injury and his status for Game 6 later this week during the postgame press conference.

“He’s not 100%, it’s pretty clear, but I don’t think he’s gonna miss the next game,” Carlisle told reporters. “We were concerned at halftime, but he insisted on playing … But he’s not 100%.”

Haliburton will have two full days off between games and close to 72 hours of real time to rehabilitate the injury, which was preexisting and which he and the team acknowledged during the Finals ahead of the re-aggravation in Game 5.

The Pacers did not disclose the precise nature of the injury before Game 5, nor did Carlisle specify it after the contest concluded.
