Commanders made the most out of their five picks in the NFL draft

The Washington Commanders held nine picks in the 2024 NFL draft, including the No. 2 overall pick. That meant the Commanders had a chance to change the course of their future with one draft class. That’s exactly what happened behind quarterback Jayden Daniels and others, giving Washington a solid young core to build around.

Unfortunately, the Commanders held only five picks in the 2025 NFL draft. Of course, Washington used several picks to acquire impactful veteran starters Marshon Lattimore, Deebo Samuel, and Laremy Tunsil. Because of their surprising season, the Commanders would not have their first pick until 29th overall.

Could Washington general manager Adam Peters nail a second consecutive draft class?

According to CBS Sports NFL draft analyst Chris Trapasso, the Commanders had one of the 10 most impactful. 2025 classes.

Here’s Trapasso:

The small class pushes the Commanders to the No. 10 spot, yet it was the second-consecutive outstanding draft for general manager Adam Peters. Conerly is as ready to go as any blocker in this class — and he very well could become an All-Pro caliber guard if that’s where he begins his career in Washington. Amos is an older, do-everything boundary corner with a fine blend of man and zone skills. Lane may be deep on the receiver depth chart now. He won’t be by November. Too sudden.

Croskey-Merritt can have an Alfred Morris-type debut season in Washington behind Brian Robinson Jr. and Co. Runners with his size, vision and particularly, explosiveness — 4.45-second 40-yard dash and 41.5-inch vertical — are rarely available in Round 7. A further step away from the Dan Snyder era in Washington.

All five picks are encouraging for Washington. Not even mentioned here was sixth-round linebacker Kain Medrano. While he may have some holes in his game, Medrano’s combination of size, speed and knack for making plays makes him an ideal developmental candidate for head coach Dan Quinn.

Conerly will start. Amos will play a lot of snaps, even if he doesn’t start immediately. And watch out for Lane. He can return punts and kicks, line up in the slot or outside, and has the speed to cement himself as an impact player in his first season.

If Peters hits on a second consecutive class, watch out.
