Commanders to participate in 2 revenge games in 2025

The Washington Commanders look to improve on their 2024 campaign in 2025, and GM Adam Peters has been busy finding the pieces the team needed to add this offseason. Bringing in Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil was huge, and then adding Trey Amos and Josh Conerly Jr. in the draft helped both sides of the ball. It won’t be easy to improve on last year because that means making a Super Bowl appearance, and their strength of schedule is more difficult this season than it was last season, but improvement is the goal.

One of the things the Commanders have to do in 2025 to improve is to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles. The two sides split the regular season home-and-away series 1-1 in 2024, but the Commanders lost to Philly in the NFC Championship game, and they don’t want that to happen again. They’ll definitely be out for blood in that one, which is why it’s one of NFL.com’s top 10 revenge games of 2025.

This has always been a spirited rivalry, but the stakes were raised last year when the Commanders made a surprise run to the NFC title game behind Jayden Daniels — only to fall to Philly in a 55-23 laugher. I’m sure every team in the NFC East still wants to beat Dallas desperately, even with the Cowboys coming off a 7-10 record. But you know Dan Quinn is going to have his team ready for both matchups in this series, especially after Washington’s Eagles-esque moves to beef up in the trenches this offseason. And the addition of Deebo Samuel should certainly help.

The last time the Commanders swept the Eagles was in 2020, and since then, the Eagles have won seven of their last nine meetings.

That’s not the only revenge game the Commanders will play this season, though. They aren’t out for revenge on this one, but the Chicago Bears are definitely out for revenge after losing on a Hail Mary pass in Week 8 in 2024.

Some might argue the Commanders’ run to the NFC Championship Game was the result of a butterfly effect that can be traced to Week 8 — when they won on a Hail Mary after Chicago CB Tyrique Stevenson chose to engage with the Washington fans instead of covering his man. The Commanders went to the playoffs, while the Bears lost nine more consecutive games and fired their coach. This will also be the second career meeting between former No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams and former No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels, with each fanbase claiming their quarterback is the best of the 2024 NFL Draft. Only this time, Daniels is an Offensive Rookie of the Year winner with a souped-up supporting cast, while Williams will have an O-line and offensive scheme built to help him reach his potential. By the way, this has to be the Sunday Night Football game in Week 1, yeah?!

Well, it’s not Week 1 on a Sunday night, but it is a primetime game. The Bears will be out to prove a point in 2025, especially last year’s number one draft pick, Caleb Williams. The Bears have made adjustments as have the Commanders, so it won’t be the same game as last year. The Bears’ goal will be to change the outcome, although they will find that difficult in Northwest Stadium.

The Commanders have a tough slate in 2025, but if you’ve been paying attention, you know they’ve done just enough to keep the momentum going this year. Even if they don’t win as many games, making the playoffs two years running is something they haven’t done since stringing together three postseason runs in a row from 1990-1992. A Super Bowl is the ultimate goal, but maintaining what they’ve built is better for longevity.
