Could Commanders target Gabe Taylor?

Could the younger brother of Washington legend Sean Taylor follow in his brother’s footsteps? Gabe Taylor was a multi-year starter for Rice and is expected to be drafted at some point in this month’s 2025 NFL draft.

The Rice Owls recently held their annual pro day, and Taylor put on a show. The safety ran the 40-yard dash with times between 4.38 and 4.4 seconds. An Instagram post showed Taylor at Rice’s pro day.

Former Washington wide receiver Santana Moss commented: “Yessuhh.” Moss was close to Sean Taylor from their time at the University of Miami and with the Redskins. Moss and Clinton Portis have remained close with Taylor’s family since his tragic death in November 2007.

After his pro day, Taylor spoke briefly about what NFL teams would get in him.

“A diamond in the rough,” Taylor said. “A person that’s going to come in and compete. I don’t care about being a superstar……I want to be the best role player I can be.”

That’s what every NFL team wants to hear. Washington general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn often speak of what they look for in “Commanders.” They like team-first guys who play fast and hit hard. Peters also looks for players who have plenty of college experience. Taylor appeared in 54 games at Rice, starting four seasons, recording 239 career tackles, 10 interceptions, 27 passes defensed, and six forced fumbles.

Someone commented on the post about Taylor to D.C., to which he responded, “It sounds good.”

Taylor is likely to go sometime on Day 3 of the draft. Washington has only five picks in the draft, but it has three on the final day. The Commanders could trade back to add more selections, and Taylor could be an ideal fit as a backup safety/special-teams ace. If Washington selected him late, it would be an incredible story.

Sean Taylor is in Washington’s Ring of Fame and is only of only five players in franchise history to have his number (21) retired.

If the Commanders drafted Taylor, he’d join his former college teammate, Luke McCaffrey, in Washington. McCaffrey played three seasons at Rice before being drafted by the Commanders last April.
