Derek Carr talks shoulder injury, Saints relationship in sermon

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr made a rare public appearance to deliver a sermon at a Las Vegas-area church last Sunday, confirming some reports about his health while shooting down other rumors surrounding his relationship and future with the team.

“Yes, I hate I have to say this, yes, I have a shoulder injury,” Carr began, pacing onstage. “Despite what ESPN says and what some lady on a podcast might think. Okay? I have the MRI report to prove it. The team knows about it. We’ve been in constant communication. There’s nothing wrong, and we’re going to go forward with that. Is that okay?”

Carr added that it’s been a difficult time for his family, sharing that his wife Heather suffered a miscarriage when they didn’t know she was pregnant, around the same time he was scheduled to fly into New Orleans for in-person meetings with the team. Anyone whose family has suffered the loss of a child can sympathize with how devastating that can be.

When that happened is unclear. Carr and his family shared photos from a vacation to Italy and France early this offseason, and he’s continued producing content with his brother David for their new Home Grown Network YouTube channel, which began by launching a luxury car review the same day his Saints teammates reported for voluntary workouts at their headquarters in Metairie. His brother spoke about Carr’s injury during NFL Network’s broadcast of the 2025 draft last Friday.

Despite previous reports saying Carr’s side leaked the news of his injury, which had been kept so airtight few members of the Saints front office were aware of it, he went on to rail about his perception online: “Twitter and Instagram has ruined things for some people. Because now all these people think that they have voices that need to be heard. Some people’s voices don’t need to be heard right now.”

The only one who can change that perception is Carr himself. For good reasons or not, he’s put a lot of distance between himself and New Orleans, and with the Saints drafting a rookie quarterback over the weekend it’s beginning to look like Carr is no longer in their plans (regardless of the line Mickey Loomis keeps repeating). We’ll keep an eye out for when, or if, Carr turns up at the team facility for practice in the months ahead.
