The Washington Commanders placed right guard Sam Cosmi on injured reserve on Monday, ending his 2025 season. What happens at right guard this week?
The Commanders host the Cowboys in what will be the final home game in a disappointing 2025 season. The game will be played on Christmas Day, another opportunity provided by the NFL to prioritize football over what matters on such an important day.

Andrew Wylie is set to replace Cosmi at right guard. Wylie has time at guard and tackle in Kansas City and here with Washington. Wylie spoke confidently on Tuesday of stepping into a role, a needed role for the good of the team. Of note is the short quote Wylie gave the media, in which Wylie volunteered that No. 3 quarterback Josh Johnson has been doing his homework all season and is prepared for this opportunity to start a game this season.
But even more significant was how Wylie did not talk of Marcus Mariota or Johnson starting. He simply put it out there that in his mind, it will be Johnson getting the start, and how he feels the offensive line should be feeling about Johnson making the start, on Thursday.
“Josh has been attacking the meetings this whole time, this whole year,” Wylie said. “So, there’s really no question that he is ready. So I think it’s just a big game for us up front, you know?”
While that may be true, Johnson was ineffective on Saturday against the Eagles, finishing with a passer rating of just 28.7.
“It’s like, how do you want to attack these things? And we are going to attack for [No.] 14 back there. You know what I mean? So I think us five up front are taking this one personal.”

Sounds like Wylie and the other linemen have already discussed playing hard for Johnson.
It sure would look better for the Commanders’ front office if Johnson plays better this week vs the Cowboys. Especially given that he has been with the team all season and the Commanders chose to keep Johnson.
