DK Metcalf was almost traded to Chargers, says Steelers DT Cam Heyward

The DK Metcalf trade was arguably the biggest offseason move in recent Pittsburgh Steelers memory—but it almost didn’t happen, according to veteran DT Cameron Heyward.

On his podcast, Not Just Football with Cam Heyward, the Steelers defensive lineman shared how he may or may not have had a hand in stealing then-Seahawks WR Metcalf from the Chargers:

“You know what’s funny—I shouldn’t be breaking this, but I was in California at the time, and I heard DK was in town. And then someone was like, ‘Oh, he’s going to the Chargers.’ So, I hit up one of my friends, Tracy Perlman. She was like, ‘Yeah, I hear he might be going.’ I’m like, ‘Text DK, tell him to come with us [Steelers],’ and then, like, in the next week, he was already with us.”

Heyward followed this groundbreaking revelation about the Metcalf trade by saying he deserves zero credit for the move, and all the praise should be directed at Steelers GM Omar Khan and HC Mike Tomlin.

Russell Wilson once claimed Heyward helped recruit him to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024—and with that in mind, is the big DT being modest, or did he really do nothing more than send a harmless text?
