Former Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers agreed to terms on his first professional contract Thursday afternoon with the Miami Dolphins.
Ewers agreed to a standard four-year pact. The Dolphins will own his rights through the 2028 season. Ewers and his rookie class will start minicamp, which begins on Friday and runs through Sunday.
According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Ewers will now begin the offseason workout program with starter Tua Tagovailoa and free agent signee Zach Wilson. Garafolo was the first to report the agreement via social media.
Ewers was the first of the Miami draft choices to agree to terms. He was one of the Dolphins' selections in the seventh round. The Dolphins had multiple picks in the seventh round and Ewers was the 231st player taken.
Ewers was mocked to be drafted with the top 10 quarterbacks. In reality, he was the 13th quarterback off the board.
The former Longhorns star was relatively familiar with the Dolphins offense long before he got his playbook. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian was a student of the Dolphins offense and incorporated much of the pre-snap motion into the Longhorns offense.
Ewers will never be mistaken for Tagovailoa, but his arm is above-average and he can throw into a tight window before the receiver gets out of his break. He anticipates where the receiver will be and puts the ball on the money.
One of the drawbacks with Ewers is he holds on to the ball too long. He takes unnecessary sacks and Dolphins' coach Mike McDaniel, who has success with young quarterbacks, will have to get Ewers to get the ball out of his hand faster.
