The Indiana Fever won their first game of the regular season over the Chicago Sky 93-58 inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Saturday, but one player did not participate in the triumphant first outing.
Sophie Cunningham sat out of the season opener with a right ankle injury, which began when she rolled her ankle during a preseason game on May 10. However, she was able to participate in practice on Monday, and Fever head coach Stephanie White gave reporters an update on the 28-year-old guard.
White said that Cunningham has made solid progress but still needs to undergo further tests and evaluation before returning to the lineup.
“She’s progressing well, and we see her every day with her movement,” the coach said. “Every day we see her more confident, a little more balanced. I’m sure Sophie [Cunningham] wants to play tomorrow, but she has to go through more tests to see if she will be ready.”
Sophie Cunningham participated in practice open to the media today. She’s listed as questionable for Tuesday v Dream.

White also said that she wants to make sure Cunningham’s ankle is fully recovered so she can play on both sides of the court without an issue.
“I want to make sure she’s 100 percent ready,” White said. “We’ve got a lot of games in a short period of time. We need her on the floor, and I don’t want to rush it and have any setbacks, so I will watch how her testing goes today and will see the results.”
In her final words, White said she must talk with the athletic and coaching staff about Cunningham’s condition to determine if she’s ready to play.
The Fever’s next game is scheduled for Wednesday at home against the Atlanta Dream, so only time can tell if Cunningham will be able to make her regular-season debut for Indiana.
