Former Jaguars’ Brandon Scherff, Gabe Davis among best available free agents

Two former Jacksonville Jaguars were named among the best available free agents following minicamp.

Two former members of the Jacksonville Jaguars are among NFL.com’s best available free agents, with most NFL minicamps now completed.

Prior to free agency beginning, Gregg Rosenthal put together his list of the top 100 best available free agents at that time. Coming in at No. 83 originally was Brandon Scherff, and added to this list somewhat recently was Gabe Davis, following his release.

Scherff was a reliable presence in the Jaguars’ offense the last three years, starting all 51 games during that span. At right guard, Scherff didn’t give up a sack this past season and ranked fourth among his position group in PFF’s pass-blocking efficiency metric. As a run-blocker, however, Scherff ranked 57th by PFF’s grading system.

Since Liam Coen took over as the Jaguars’ head coach, he’s made it clear that the play of the offensive line has to improve this season. To help accomplish that, GM James Gladstone made six additions up front between free agency and the NFL draft.

Also of note, under Gladstone, the Jaguars are the only team in the NFL that didn’t re-sign one of their own unrestricted free agents this offseason.

Due to former GM Trent Baalke using void years on Scherff’s deal, he leaves behind a dead cap hit of $13.8 million that counts towards the Jaguars’ 2025 salary cap, even though he isn’t on the team.

With Davis, he was under contract originally after signing with the Jaguars during the 2024 offseason. But after the NFL draft, the Jaguars released him and by doing so, are taking on a hefty dead cap hit of $20.3 million that will be spread out over the next two seasons.

Davis would play in only 10 games in his first and only season with the Jaguars, with a knee injury cutting his season short. After being a big play threat in Buffalo, Davis caught just 20-of-42 passes in 2024 with Jacksonville, for 239 yards at 12.0 yards per catch with two scores.

With the additions of Dyami Brown and Travis Hunter this offseason, who joined Brian Thomas Jr. and Parker Washington, Davis would have been, at best, the fifth receiver on the depth chart, and that’s a big salary to have on the sidelines. By moving on now, the Jaguars can begin getting the contract off their books.
