Former Longhorns reliever Aiden Moffett has checked off a significant career milestone. The talented right-hander signed with the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. While the talented reliever has had an up-and-down college career, his arm is full of potential. After one year with Texas, he is moving on to the next level.
During his college career, Moffett made 23 appearances for LSU and Texas. In 21.2 innings of work, the talented 21-year-old posted a 5.40 ERA. While he did struggle with control at times, Moffett struck out 18 batters, seven of which came with Texas. He is coming off his best collegiate season, in which he posted a 2.25 ERA during his only year wearing burnt orange.
In Moffett, the Cubs are getting a pitcher with an intriguing arsenal. His fastball tops out in the high nineties, and his off-speed pitches have frustrated hitters over the last three years. He has kept opponents off balance with an elite sinker and slider combination.
Now that his college career Is in the books, Moffett can shift his focus to making an impact with the Cubs. His MLB debut is most likely a few years away, but the Cubs think highly of him. Less than 24 hours after the draft ended, Chicago made sure to get Moffett in their system.
Over the last few months in Austin, Moffett has shown flashes of being a very dominant reliever. That is partly due to the work he put in during his time as a Longhorn. As he moves through the minors, Moffett will be a player to watch.
