EDMONTON — Friday night is the new trade deadline.
Or, at least, NHL teams seem to think it is.
While the Edmonton Oilers were grabbing some shut-eye to prepare for Saturday’s tilt against the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs, a few other teams were making trades. The newest archnemesis of the Oilers, the Vancouver Canucks, made not one but two trades on Friday.

To #NYR: J.T. Miller, Erik Brannstrom, Jackson Dorrington
To #Canucks: Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, 2025 1st Round Pick (Top 13 Protected)
No salary retained on Miller. If #NYR pick is in Top 13, pick transfers to 2026.

The first deal involved trading away J.T. Miller. The disgruntled forward, along with Erik Brannstrom and Jackson Dorrington, was sent to the New York Rangers. The team received Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, and a 2025 top-13 protected first-round draft pick in return.
That’s a whopper of a deal.

Now here is where the former Oilers player gets involved in the trade the Canucks made with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Canucks acquired Drew O’Connor and Marcus Pettersson.
The first-round pick acquired from the Rangers, Danton Heinen, Melvin Fernstrom, and Vincent Desharnais, go the other way.
Thus ends the Desharnais saga in Vancouver.

Desharnais signed with the Canucks as a free agent on July 1st. He signed a two-year $2 million contract, which was seen as a win. But Vancouver has soured on him, and now he joins another former Oilers player, Jesse Puljujarvi, in Pittsburgh.
In 34 games, he has three assists while averaging 15:58 of time on ice. This is the highest ice time and the lowest point total of his career to date.
He now joins a team that boasts Erik Karlson and Kris Letang on the right side. Desharnais can be a physical presence and anchor the Penguins’ third-pairing.
