Giants end up with dynamic tight end in The Athletic’s 2024 re-draft

It’s always a fun exercise to re-draft previous NFL drafts based on what we’ve learned since draft day.

The New York Giants would love to have a do-over on many of their recent first-round picks, specifically Daniel Jones, Evan Neal, Kadarius Toney, and Deonte Banks. Knowing what we know now, those players would never have donned the Blue.

2024 was not one of those years, however. The Giants were not able to get into the Top 3 from No. 6 overall, to one of the top quarterbacks in the draft (Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams, Drake Maye). Instead, they stayed put and lucked into LSU superstar wideout Malik Nabers.

In a recent re-draft of last year’s draft, the folks at The Athletic believe the Giants would still have lucked into a great player, just not Nabers.

In the re-draft, the three quarterbacks fly off the board in the first three selections. Maye still goes to New England at No. 3, but Daniels is taken by Chicago first overall and Williams falls to Washington at No. 2.

Arizona, who took wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. at No. 4 last year, jumps on Nabers instead this time while the Los Angeles Chargers stick with their original pick (offensive tackle Joe Alt of Notre Dame) at No. 5.

With Nabers off the board, the Giants select Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, who went on set rookie records for receiving in 2024.

The Giants certainly hit the jackpot with Nabers, so it’s hard to say they should’ve done something else here. But he’s off the board this time around, so it’s Bowers. The tight end was the best rookie pass catcher in the history of the league last year, with a ridiculous 112-catch, 1,194-yard season, on a team without a true starting QB.

Bottom line, it’s great to be at the top of the draft sometimes. The Giants are there again this year, but even in a better spot at No. 3. They will end up with another great prospect such as Colorado cornerback Travis Hunter or Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter.
