Giants’ Joe Schoen listed among NFL’s ‘most concerning GMs’

In his four seasons as New York Giants general manager, Joe Schoen has made major strides in improving what was considered to be an impossible situation.

Schoen was left a mess by his predecessors, Dave Gettleman and Jerry Reese. He was charged with revamping a roster devoid of talent and a salary cap situation that could take years to straighten out.

Schoen has been able to get both things done admirably but the Giants are still one of the NFL’s worst-performing teams. As a result, Schoen’s seat is getting warm. The Giants have to start winning soon or he’ll be out.

In a recent piece, CBS Sports analyst Cody Benjamin rates Schoen as one of the NFL’s “most concerning general managers.”

“Schoen has run a perpetual rebuild in New York,” writes Benjamin.

Benjamin is correct. Schoen has already begun to draft over and replace some of his earlier picks.

In 2022, the Giants took outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux of Oregon and Alabama offensive tackle Evan Neal in the top seven in the draft. Schoen has since added additional pass rushers in Brian Burns and Abdul Carter to compete with Thibodeaux. Neal has been a bust at tackle, especially in pass protection. He’s been replaced by veteran free agents and has been moved to guard.

Schoen’s 2023 top pick, Maryland cornerback Deonte Banks, took a major step back in his second season, leaving the Giants without a solid CB1. They had to spend free-agent capital on Paulson Adebo this offseason.

The Giants may finally have fixed their quarterback issues after two seasons of injuries and erratic play. Schoen added veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston and selected Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart in the first round of the draft.
