The Philadelphia Eagles continued their Super Bowl celebration on Monday at the White House, where they met with President Donald Trump.
Unsurprisingly, things quickly turned controversial.
Even before Philadelphia’s appearance on the south lawn, superstar running back Saquon Barkley sparked controversy after playing a round of golf with Trump over the weekend before flying back to the White House alongside the president on Air Force One.
Barkley again became the focal point on Monday when the Eagles presented Trump with his own jersey.
While addressing the team and those in attendance, Trump marveled at Barkley’s 2024 performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars, including the running back’s viral reverse hurdle.
In typical Trump fashion, he kept going and spun a yarn about the New York Giants.
“By the way, I have to tell you something,” Trump said. “I was with the Giants and the head coach and some people and said, ‘Do anything you have to, but don’t lose Saquon.’ They lost Saquon.
“That was not good. I called that one. That was an easy one to call because he played damn well for the Giants. I can tell you that. He made the right decision because it is a team sport, and there are great people on this team.”
Those comments did not sit well with the Giants, who denied Trump ever meeting with anyone from the team.
Giants vice president of communications Pat Hanlon told Front Office Sports “there were no conversations” between Trump and the Giants regarding Barkley.
Hanlon then took to X and told Trump to “stop yapping.”
Whether Trump spoke with anyone from the team about Barkley or not, general manager Joe Schoen’s handling of that negotiation was objectively poor. Co-owner John Mara recognized Barkley’s significance and that disagreement (and subsequent aftermath) played out for the football world to see on Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants.
Barkley went on to win a Super Bowl title with New York’s chief division rivals, while Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll very nearly lost their jobs. And now they’re catching strays from the President of the United States of America.
