How could the Bucs build Baker Mayfield’s next contract extension?

With Brock Purdy inking a massive five-year, $265 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers, the quarterback market has taken another big jump. While Purdy is now locked in at $53 million per year on average, that doesn’t mean every capable starter will hit that same number, but it does move the goalposts for players like Baker Mayfield.

Coming off the best season of his career, Mayfield has positioned himself as more than just a bridge option at quarterback. He’s become a leader, trusted at the helm of an offense with more than enough firepower, and the Bucs may want to look into extending him before the price takes another jump. What would a new deal look like if Tampa Bay decides to pay him like a top quarterback without going full Purdy?

Proposed New Contract: 4 years, $190 million

  • Average per year: $47.5 million
  • Guaranteed at signing: $115 million
  • Total guarantees: $140 million
  • Signing bonus: $45 million
  • Incentives: Up to $8 million (based on team success, Pro Bowl nods, and performance)

This contract places Mayfield firmly in the second tier of quarterback deals below the Burrow/Mahomes/Purdy group but comfortably above players like Geno Smith and Daniel Jones. It also edges slightly under Jared Goff’s recent $50 million AAV extension, which feels like a fair placeholder.

For the Buccaneers, it provides long-term stability, allows for continuity in offensive identity and chemistry, and keeps them ahead of the ever-growing quarterback market. For Baker Mayfield, it rewards him with near-elite money without overreaching, provides near top-10 quarterback security, recognition, and career stability, and leaves the door open for another payday down the road.

If the Buccaneers believe that Mayfield is their quarterback of the future, and all signs point to that being the case, then it makes sense to get ahead of the market before it climbs even higher as the next crop of players is set to blow the price out of the water.
