The New Jersey Devils have been connected to Montreal Canadiens forward Jake Evans throughout this season. It is not particularly surprising that the Devils are interested in him, as they need help down the middle in their bottom six. Acquiring Evans would certainly provide them with that.

On a recent episode of TSN Insider Trading, Pierre LeBrun revealed the Canadiens’ asking price for Evans.

“I don’t think they’re interested in getting a third-round pick or fourth-round pick for Jake Evans,” LeBrun said. “That doesn’t move the needle for them. They might as well just keep him and try and stay in a playoff race… I think the low bar, the threshold, is a second-round pick at worst for Montreal on a Jake Evans deal, so teams have to step up.”

It is understandable that the Habs are looking for at least a second-round pick for Evans. He is a solid two-way center in the middle of a strong season while also having an easily affordable $1.7 million cap hit. Thus, if the Devils want to acquire him, it isn’t going to necessarily come cheap.

However, considering that Evans would give the Devils an upgrade at the third-line center spot and another option for their penalty kill, it would be big if they landed him. In 58 games this season, the Toronto, Ontario native has 11 goals, 27 points, 85 hits, and a plus-2 rating.
