J.J. McCarthy remains a storyline for Vikings as training camp looms

The storyline of J.J. McCarthy and his return is less than a week away from going from a pondering of what could be to having a clear idea of what he is going to be like. Until then, we will have a couple more analysts sharing their concerns or reasons for optimism to see where things settle.

The latest analyst to discuss the return of J.J. McCarthy was ESPN’s Benjamin Solak. The NFL analyst wrote up several training camp storylines heading into the big rollout that happens next week across the league, and the Vikings’ former top draft pick made the cut.

Solak wrote up how there are good and bad signs for McCarthy as he nears his return, and discussed how he felt about the two ideas. He writes, “We shouldn’t overreact to anything we get in training camp, especially negative. The McCarthy we get in August won’t be the McCarthy we see in December, as a season’s worth of NFL action teaches some big lessons. But the Vikings are in a competitive division and harbor deep playoff aspirations. They only have so much leash to give a rookie, especially when you consider how easily Kevin O’Connell has made veteran quarterbacks shine in this offense. McCarthy’s health and confidence are about as big of a July storyline as you get in the NFL.”

There may not be another player who has been talked about more this offseason? Not, but that just means that he will have a chance to quiet everyone at the same time.
