White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt found a new way to praise President Donald Trump on Monday ― by saying he might have helped Shedeur Sanders get selected in the fifth round of the NFL draft.
Although the Colorado quarterback and son of the school’s head coach, NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, was expected by many to be drafted in the first round on Thursday, he wasn’t picked until the draft’s fifth round on Saturday.
Some of the reasons bandied around for the draft drop included worries about Sanders’ arm strength, the 94 times he was sacked during his two years at Colorado and how his outspoken father might react publicly if he didn’t like how a team was developing his son.
However, Sanders was finally drafted by Cleveland, who made the move after Trump posted on his Truth Social platform Friday criticizing teams for not selecting the Colorado QB, and claiming Sanders’ “PHENOMENAL GENES” made him “all set for Greatness.”
Considering how bad Trump is polling in his first 100 days during his second term, Leavitt was happy to find something, anything, that she could spin into a positive for her fearless leader.
“Hey, I will say is the president put out a statement, and a few rounds later, he was drafted,” Leavitt said, laughing. “So I think the facts speak for themselves on that one, Peter.”

Although Trump probably loved Leavitt’s cheeky response, many people on X, formerly Twitter, just found it annoying.
