The Chicago Bears have made some big moves this offseason, but the work is far from over, especially as it pertains to rewarding in-house talent including cornerback Kyler Gordon, who’s entering a contract year.
Gordon has developed into one of the NFL’s best nickel cornerbacks, and he could find even more success under new defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. Last season, Gordon had a career-high 75 tackles, including our tackles for loss, four pass breakups, 0.5 sack, one forced fumble, three fumble recoveries and two QB hits in 15 games.
During his media availability at the NFL Owners Meetings on Tuesday, general manager Ryan Poles reiterated that signing Gordon to an extension remains a priority as the Bears want him for the long haul.
“That will still be a priority,” Poles said, via Courtney Cronin. “For me, in our exit meetings at the end of last season, I told all the guys in terms of future, if it was contracts, coming back, anything like that, the important thing is I’ve got to get with our new coaching staff and kind of see how the different players fit based on the scheme. We’ve been able to have those conversations and I know Kyler is a guy that we want to be a part of this moving forward. So the timing of that, I’m not sure how that all is going work out, but that is a priority.”
During his introductory press conference, Allen mentioned he has a vision for how Gordon will be utilized as an “outstanding nickel player.” He fits with the “attacking, aggressive style of defense” that Allen is looking to build in Chicago, and Gordon has certainly made his case for a contract extension.
Now, it’s a matter of if the Bears can get something done before the 2025 season.
