Lawrence County rides Robinson’s poster to county-rivalry win

Nov. 22—MOULTON — Once Lawrence County’s KJ Robinson got the steal and saw he was 1-on-1 with his defender on the fast break, his eyes lit up like he was staring at Thanksgiving dinner.

The junior cut baseline and rose up to dunk on his East Lawrence (1-3) defender, extending the Red Devil boys’ (2-2) lead to seven at the end of the third quarter.

Lawrence County then rode the momentum from that posterizing dunk to a 64-45 county-rivalry win on Friday night.

“After he (my defender) bumped shoulders with me it kind of made me mad. So I got the steal, I looked up and he was right beside me, right there I knew I was going to jump,” Robinson said. “After, the crowd sounded crazy and that really turned us up.”

The Red Devils went on to outscore East Lawrence 19-7 in the fourth quarter, grabbing an almost 20-point win after they led at halftime by only five 32-27.

“When I called timeout, I told my boys that East Lawrence wasn’t going to lay down. We’ve got to find some way to put them down, and that dunk did it,” Lawrence County head coach Jeff Hodge Jr. said. “Every day he dunks during practice, he tells me he’s going to get one. Well, he got one.”

It was a team win for Lawrence County as they had four players in double-digit points. East Lawrence only had one.

“After losing to Athens in overtime last game, we didn’t know if we’d come out slow for this game,” Robinson said. “But we came out and played hard tonight.”

Lawrence County also outrebounded East Lawrence through the game. Lawrence County’s Jackson Smith had over six offensive rebounds to go with his game-high 15 points.

“Last year we were a terrible rebounding team,” Hodge said. “So this year our main focus was rebounding and defense. Those offensive rebounds we got tonight have been happening since the season started.”

East Lawrence Girls 63, Lawrence County 37: Macey Austin’s game-high 26 points and over seven steals led East Lawrence (3-2) to a county-rivalry win on the road Friday against winless Lawrence County.
