MSU rumored target, 7-foot-2 center Lewis Obiorah commits to Texas

A rumored Michigan State transfer target is off the board.

English center Lewis Obiorah has committed to Texas, according to Jonathan Givony of ESPN. Obiorah was rumored to be a target of the Spartans this spring, and was even linked to Michigan State via social media followings. However, it appears he will not be joining the Spartans for next season and is heading to Austin, Texas instead.

Obiorah is a 7-foot-2 center that possesses a 7-foot-7 wingspan. He played for the Barking Abbey Basketball Academy in London.

Obiorah was named the English Basketball Player of the Year this past season with a stellar 10.7 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game performance over the course of the season.

Michigan State certainly could have used another big like Obiorah to back fill for the production lost in graduating center Szymon Zapala. But he was also considered a project player that Michigan State would need to further develop and not be an instant star at the center position. So while losing out on this recruiting battle is not ideal, it shouldn’t have a great impact on the Spartans for next season.
