The Commanders will have a new No. 78 for the 2025 season.
With Laremy Tunsil being traded to the Commanders last week and Cornelius Lucas deciding to sign a free-agent contract with the Cleveland Browns, the No. 78 was up for grabs and available.
Lucas wore No. 78 all five of his seasons with Washington (2020-24), primarily serving as the team’s swing tackle. Turning 34 in July, Lucas was basically allowed to go elsewhere and chose the Browns.
In his five seasons, Lucas prepared well and consequently performed well when called upon due to injuries of other tackles. When moved into the starting lineup, Lucas started eight (2020), seven (2021), 12 (2022), four (2023) and seven (2024) games. Though undrafted out of Kansas State, Lucas worked hard and has played in the league for 11 seasons, playing in 129 games and starting 54.
Tunsil wore No. 78 with the Texans (2019-24) and previously with the Dolphins (2018), after beginning his career wearing No. 67 in the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
As for Redskins/Commanders history of wearing No. 78? Some notable and significant contributors have worn No. 78, wearing the burgundy and gold.
