While some would classify the New York Giants’ plan on trading up to the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft as “dead,” others aren’t so certain.
Long-time Yahoo! Sports insider Charles Robinson, appearing on 102.5 The Game, reports that as recently as a few weeks ago, Cam Ward’s circle was convinced the Giants would trade up and select him first overall.
Since then, the Giants have signed Russell Wilson and agreed to terms with Jameis Winston. Their desire for a first-round quarterback has been called into question, but reports vary. Some believe they will stay in place at No. 3 overall and hope Shedeur Sanders falls, while others, like Robinson, still think they will attempt to trade up with the Tennessee Titans.
However, the cost of this year’s first-round pick has become increasingly expensive. For that reason, Robinson feels general manager Joe Schoen will ultimately come up short in his efforts.
“I don’t see the Giants moving from three to one for anything less than three first-round picks, or something of that nature; something of that value when you add up all of the assets,” Robinson said. “If they stay put, I don’t see them being out of the market for a quarterback at No. 3 as well.
“I think, to me, it’s more likely than not (they) stay put at No. 3.”
Whatever the Giants do, Robinson feels like co-owner John Mara will have his hand in things.
“Whatever happens is very John Mara-inspired,” he said. “I don’t think there’s any question John Mara wants the quarterback situation solved.”
Ward is unquestionably the top quarterback in the 2025 class, but potentially trading three first-round picks to land him is a fool’s errand. He wouldn’t have been considered top four or five in last year’s class and is overhyped due to the unimpressive nature of this year’s class.
The Giants would be better served hoping Sanders slips to them at No. 3 and even that would arguably be considered an overdraft.
