NFL world blasts officials for holding call

The Chicago Bears suffered another demoralizing loss, this one a 27-24 defeat to the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football. The Bears held a 17-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter, when it all caved in on Ben Johnson’s team.

When looking at this loss, there’s plenty of blame to go around, mostly on the offense for their lack of execution after a nearly-flawless opening possession. There were too many pre-snap penalties, which plagued them during the summer, quarterback Caleb Williams regressed from start to finish and the officials didn’t make it any easier.

The Bears had a ridiculous 12 penalties for 127 yards, some earned, others debatable. There were some questionable calls against the Bears in the second half that helped get the Vikings back in this game, including a phantom pass interference call on cornerback Tyrique Stevenson. But the most egregious was a holding call on right tackle Darnell Wright that changed the trajectory of the game.

With the Bears offense driving at the start of the fourth quarter — sitting at first and 10 from Minnesota’s 24-yard line — Wright was called for holding on what was obviously not a hold. It backed Chicago up 10 yards and killed the drive, ending in a Cairo Santos missed 50-yard field goal. The Vikings went on to score three consecutive touchdowns to mount the comeback.

As you can imagine, there was plenty of reaction from fans — both Bears and NFL alike — about the egregious holding call on Wright, blasting the officials for their incompetence.
