Ohio State QB Julian Sayin among top ten according to USA TODAY

The quarterback position is one that has been one of the best in the country over the last couple of decades. From Braxton Miller to Terrelle Pryor, to Justin Fields, to C.J. Stroud, not many programs can boast about the production we’ve seen wearing the Scarlet and Gray recently. Heck, even the one year of Will Howard taking the team to a College Football Playoff national championship was one for the ages.

Enter stage left, redshirt freshman Julian Sayin as the next in line. You would expect some growing pains for a young guy trying to get a grasp on the college game, but so far, he has more than exceeded expectations, and the recognition is starting to come along with what we’ve seen on the field of play.

USA TODAY’s Paul Myerberg ranks the top ten college quarterbacks after each week of the season, and he has begun to also give Sayin his flowers. In fact, after Week 5 of the college football season, Myerberg has the Ohio State gunslinger among the top in the country, checking in at No. 8.

“Sayin completed 22 of 28 throws for 208 yards and two scores without a turnover in the Buckeyes’ 24-6 win at Washington,” Myerberg wrote. “While the coaching staff cut Sayin loose in games against Gramling and Ohio, the wins against the Huskies and No. 7 Texas saw OSU lean on a more balanced game plan that should play very well against the best teams in the Big Ten.”

It’s true that the coaching staff hasn’t let the former 5-star talent take the sports car that is the OSU offense out for a spin all by himself just yet against the best defenses he’s faced so far, but you have to believe the keys are in his hands, ready to use as the season goes on.

As well as Sayin has played, you have to wonder which quarterbacks are above him. At No. 1, Myerberg has Oregon’s Dante Moore, followed by Diego Pavia of Vanderbilt (2), Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza (3), Carson Beck of Miami (FL) (4), Alabama’s Ty Simpson (5), CJ Carr of Notre Dame (6), and Dylan Raiola of Nebraska (7) ahead of Sayin. Trinidad Chambliss of Ole Miss (9), and Georgia Tech’s Haynes King round out the list of the top ten after Week 5.

Don’t be surprised if Sayin continues to climb these rankings, and there’s a good argument to be made that he should be higher on this list already.
