Oregon Fans React Negatively to New College Football Playoff Format

News of a major College Football Playoff format change broke Thursday, and Oregon fans weren’t happy.

According to Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, the 2025 CFP will shift to a straight seeding format, awarding first-round byes to the top four teams regardless of conference title status.

Conference champions will still receive automatic bids, but will be seeded based on ranking moving forward.

“If straight seeding was in place last year,” McMurphy wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Texas & Penn State would have received 1st-round byes; Boise State drops from No. 3 to No. 9 seed; Arizona State from No. 4 to No. 11.”

That hypothetical reshuffling would’ve had a big impact on Oregon’s postseason.

Under the new rules, the Ducks — who earned the No. 1 seed as Big Ten champions — would’ve missed eventual champion Ohio State and instead played the winner of Boise State vs. Indiana in the quarterfinal round.

The reaction from Oregon fans online was swift and emotional.

“Very cool to do this after Oregon was the number 1 seed!” one fan posted sarcastically. “Hahahaha! So cool. Like really, really, really cool. We are cursed and I hate life.”

Even national outlets quickly took notice. OutKick posted a GIF of The Office’s Michael Scott staring blankly into space, captioned: “Oregon fans realizing they were the sacrifice for CFP straight seeding.”

With the CFP set to expand to 14 or 16 teams in 2026, fans can expect more debate and chaos in coming years.

The Ducks will be in action when they host Montana State on Saturday, August 30 at Autzen Stadium. A kickoff time has yet to be determined.
