Was a resurgent 2024 enough to get Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young a higher spot on Pro Football Focus’ rankings?
NFL contributor John Kosko manned this offseason’s quarterback rankings for PFF, which placed Young at No. 25 in last year’s exercise. And thanks to a career-saving campaign, the former No. 1 overall pick made a respectable jump to No. 20 this time around.
Kosko writes:
After struggling mightily as a rookie and getting benched following two poor starts in 2024, Young completely turned things around. From Week 8 onward, he graded as the 13th-best quarterback in the league, earning an 83.2 overall mark over that 10-game stretch. It’s a limited sample, so caution is warranted — but leading the NFL with a 7.7% big-time throw rate while posting just a 2.3% turnover-worthy play rate is an impressive combination. The 2025 season will be pivotal in proving that the breakout wasn’t just a flash in the pan.
Young was benched following a miserable two-game stretch to begin his second pro season. He returned to the starting lineup in Week 8, and would go on to complete 61.8 percent of his passing attempts for 2,104 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions while leading the Panthers to a 4-6 record.
The 23-year-old was placed in the fourth tier of PFF’s rankings, which was designated for “young players with a wide range of potential outcomes.” That group also includes Denver’s Bo Nix (No. 19), Minnesota’s J.J. McCarthy (No. 21), New England’s Drake Maye (No. 22), Atlanta’s Michael Penix Jr. (No. 23), Chicago’s Caleb Williams (No. 24) and Tennessee’s Cam Ward (No. 25).
