Many people have criticized Luka Doncic for not doing a good job with his fitness and conditioning, and that criticism has hit a crescendo over the last few months ever since the Dallas Mavericks traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers. Now that he’s a member of basketball’s most famous and glamorous franchise, his lack of stamina and endurance, especially late in games, has been under a microscope for all the world to see.
A big key for the Lakers’ championship hopes moving forward will be how much Doncic improves his fitness and conditioning. According to Jason Gallagher, the producer of the “Mind the Game” podcast with LeBron James and Steve Nash, said on “The Dumb Zone” podcast that he has heard some good things about the superstar’s plans as far as taking care of his body.
“I have heard from folks that are pretty honest about the conditioning stuff or whatever, that Luka has already begun to clean slate, starting anew. He is already in this mindset of changing a lot about himself. Now, I’ve heard it before. But not from specific people that have been critical of him.”
It may be hard to believe, given how phenomenal a player he has already been over the last several years, but Doncic could have plenty of room for improvement as a player. His defense has obviously been a problem, but he can also become a much more efficient shooter.
This season, he averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 7.7 assists a game while shooting 45% from the field, 36.8% from 3-point range and 78.2% from the free throw line. Perhaps with the right mindset and type of work throughout the year, he could become a 50/40/90 player or at least come close to those efficiency marks.
Improving his overall fitness alone would likely help bump his shooting percentages a bit, as it would help him hit more shots during the fourth quarter.
